EXCERPT:
With all of the question marks surrounding the building of a New Westminster secondary school, there’s no question the uncertainty is hurting the Massey Theatre.
“There’s a message getting out to some people that the Massey is closing down. It may not be correct but that’s what people are thinking,” said Jessica Schneider, executive director of the Massey Theatre.
Events for the theatre, which are booked a year in advance, are down.
“It’s a catch-22 for us. We can’t promote the theatre when we can’t promise if it’s going to be open next year. We just have to sit here and watch it slip.”
My comment, as added to the News Leader web site:
ReplyDeleteI read in the paper yesterday the the BC legislature had a study done a few years ago that said it would need $17 million in upgrades to bring it up to contemporary standards. How is it possible that the Massey could "require" more upgrades than the Legislature? The continuous repetition of this bogus study and $18 million figure in the local newspapers has to stop! That report has been discredited by the majority of commentators on the issue. Please stop reprinting the fact that this assessment study was published in September, without mention of the immediate and sustained severe criticism that accompanied it! Both facts are part of the public record and should be reported together.
